Public procurement accounts for a significant share of Slovakia’s economy—making it a critical lever for climate action, innovation, and sustainable economic recovery. A recent study reveals that although just one-third of Slovak municipalities have adopted green purchasing policies, these cities lead the way in embedding sustainability into daily decisions and fostering positive change.
The research shows that when Slovak municipalities champion green procurement, they’re more likely to set bold sustainability goals, use eco-labels in tenders, support SMEs, and invest in employee training. Key barriers remain, including tight budgets, complex rules, and limited expertise or awareness, which can silo teams and stifle progress.
Moving forward, strengthening green procurement in Slovakia will depend on new training for local officials, clearer sustainability targets, and practical support—like shared resources and information hubs. When properly resourced, green public procurement doesn’t just hit compliance targets; it sparks innovation, drives climate leadership, and improves public services for all Slovaks.
