The article discusses the state of the US economy, which is a leading issue for voters this fall, as the presidential election draws nearer.

  • Voters' economic anxiety stems from a combination of job loss during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation.
  • Despite public perception, the economic outlook of the nation is solid, and the economy has grown at an annual rate of 2.8 percent.
  • The main challenge for Harris as the election approaches is demonstrating to voters that she understands their frustrations with the economy.

Professor Bruckner said: "The reality is things are still very expensive and even if inflation is ostensibly and demonstrably lower, people don't feel that when they go to the grocery store. People are going to look at the economy with how they're feeling with what they can afford in their own lives, and who can articulate a narrative around inflation, acknowledging that prices are high along with policy prescriptions, is going to prevail."
