The Many Lenses of Marketing

Kogod School of Business professor of marketing Elicia John takes a multi-pronged approach to her research. After all, business issues are just as often social, psychological, and scientific, and her work explores topics that benefit from varied perspectives. When delving into subjects such as climate change, transnational interaction, and the intersection of consumer well-being and race, John believes that finding meaningful answers requires an open mind.

“When we’re addressing these challenging issues, we have to have an openness to take a mixed perspective and use different methodologies,” she explained. “We need to consider the different ways of getting information to describe the problem so that we can understand the mechanisms that drive outcomes related to disparities.”

Public policy has been a common thread in John's work with professional experience ranging from national security to climate change studies. She has spent her career tackling challenging topics from police reform to the spread of misinformation and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. She emphasizes the importance of facing these issues with creativity and bravery.
