The Findings Explained: Summary

For the first time, the top two spots went to Tesla.

The Model Y and Model 3 Long Range models tied at no. 1 and the Y and 3 normal range models tied at no. 2.

Two of Stellantis’ Jeep Cherokees come in at no. 3 and no. 4 with Tesla’s Models X and Y also tied at no. 4.

At no. 5, Honda’s Passport model ties with the Volkswagen iD.4 with the 82KWH battery.

The Lincoln Corsair which was no. 1 in 2022 dropped to no. 6 as the result of a major drop in US/Canadian content from 72 percent to 56 percent.

Honda’s Odyssey minivan and the Honda Acura MDX also rank no. 6.

The Mustang GT and Corvette Sting Ray come in at no. 7. The Sting Ray, ranked no. 3 in 2022 also saw a drop in US/Canadian content from 62 percent to 50 percent.

The Camaro 1L Coupe Turbo ranks no. 8 while seven Hondas and one Toyota are tied at no. 9.

The Cadillac Lyriq EV and the Lucid Air EV round out the top 10.

Looking at the past 10 years of data, there are interesting changes in the composition of the top 10. Tesla began production of the Model S in 2012, but we could not find data for it until the 2013 model year when it entered the index at no. 14.

Tesla now has five models in the top 10. The 2013 index is dominated by the traditional Big Three, Ford, GM, and Chrysler (pre-merger with Fiat).

With the Chrysler-Fiat merger (Creating Fiat Chrysler Automotive) we decided to reduce the weights by 50 percent for profit margin and research and development. Despite these changes, FCA vehicles (now known as Stellantis) do quite well in the index.

Also, in 2013, the index was dominated by the traditional Big Three with only one non-US vehicle included, the Toyota Avalon at no. 10.

Considering the changes in domestic content since 2015 by manufacturers with significant sales and operations in the USA, we found that foreign manufacturers were more likely to increase the US sourcing overall in comparison to US manufacturers.
