Entrepreneurship

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST
BUILDING A BUSINESS

Honing the skills that build leadership confidence is a major part of the Kogod experience.

Teaching & Curricula

Entrepreneurship courses are housed in Kogod's Department of Management and are open to all American University students—either as a BSBA specialization, an undergraduate minor, or through electives.

Professionalism & Core Human Skills

At the Center for Professionalism & Communications (ProComms), students focus on career and self-development, communication, critical thinking, equity and inclusion, leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and technology—all with experienced mentors teaching tact in an age of AI efficiency.

Real-World Learning

From workshops and activations to speaker series, from competitions to American University's Business Incubator, students across AU have opportunities for hands-on learning that bolster their academic experiences, preparing them to become capable communicators and confident complex problem-solvers.

External Engagement

Whether the Veloric Center is bringing students to DC Startup & Tech Week or hosting a panel of investors to judge a competition on campus, Kogod fosters engagement with the community (and the robust DMV entrepreneurial ecosystem) as a core pillar of its approach to entrepreneurship.

THE VELORIC CENTER FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

American University's engine for entrepreneurial thinking and action.

The Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship focuses on cultivating the entrepreneurial mindset and fostering a culture of creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, risk-taking, and resilience.

The Veloric Center provides a range of experiential learning opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students (workshops, speaker series, and competitions), supports students and recent AU alumni as they launch startup companies through the AU Business Incubator, and oversees the entrepreneurship curriculum within the Department of Management (Entrepreneurship Specialization & Minor). The Veloric Center has recently partnered with colleagues across AU from the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to create two entrepreneurship certificates: the STEM Entrepreneurship in Biotechnology Certificate (14 credits) and the STEM Entrepreneurship in Physics Certificate (13 credits).

ENTREPRENEURSHIP FACULTY

Our instructors are seasoned founders. They bring that real experience into the classroom.

At Kogod, we believe entrepreneurship programs should be led by people who really get it: experienced entrepreneurs.

That's why the Veloric Center is helmed by Director Tommy White and Assistant Director Danielle Vogel, both serial entrepreneurs and active investors.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP
IN ACTION:

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY
BUSINESS INCUBATOR

The AU Business Incubator supports graduate and undergraduate students (and recent alumni) as they launch both for-profit and non-profit ventures. The program provides admitted founders with one-on-one mentorship, networking and educational opportunities, access to resources and non-dilutive grant funding, 24/7 workspace in the Don Myers Technology & Innovation building (2,000 sq. ft.), and structured guidance throughout the startup journey.

Approximately 50 percent of applicants are admitted to the highly selective program, which has served nearly 200 ventures since its inception in 2014, and 75 percent of admitted founders identify as women and/or minorities.

DC STARTUP & TECH WEEK

For students interested in entrepreneurship, DC acts as a live learning lab—one where AI, sustainability, and tech-forward business models intersect with real-world impact. By participating in DC Startup & Tech Week, students are able to network with founders, meet potential employers, and explore pathways into AI-driven industries, sustainability-focused startups, and emerging digital markets.

The Veloric Center co-sponsors DC Startup & Tech Week, which attracts over 5,000 attendees annually. In addition to the main event, the Veloric Center hosts the annual DMV Universities Student Entrepreneurship Happy Hour and Pitch Competition, bringing together students from DC-area universities.

STUDENT COMPETITIONS

At Kogod, entrepreneurship education isn’t just about launching a startup — it’s about developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and building tomorrow’s leaders in the process.

Through dynamic, interdisciplinary competitions, students can channel their curiosity, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit into meaningful action.

From leveraging artificial intelligence to solve sustainability challenges to evaluating real companies to determine investability, entrepreneurship competitions invite students to collaborate across disciplines, build tangible solutions, and reimagine how innovation can serve people and the planet.

The AI x Sustainability Challenge Competition

The AI x Sustainability Challenge Competition brings together student innovators from across the university to tackle pressing community problems through technology. Hosted by the Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship in partnership with AU’s STEM Programs and Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence, this eight-week competition challenges teams to design scalable, AI-powered solutions for real-world sustainability issues facing Washington, DC communities. Participants explore tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and low-code platforms to build and test prototypes while applying human-centered design, market analysis, and ethical AI principles. The top-performing teams earn funding, mentorship, and a pathway to the AU Incubator — turning their classroom insights into viable, impact-driven ventures

Venture Capital Investment Competition

The Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) is an annual global competition sponsored by UNC Chapel Hill in which the globe's top 80 business schools compete. Students roleplay as venture capitalists to real companies seeking financing by preparing and negotiating a term sheet. The event includes an internal Kogod competition, regional competitions, and the global finals. Graduate and undergraduate students participate in separate competitions. This is a highly prestigious and visible event for Kogod. Since our participation launch in 2015, over 200 students have participated in the competition.

FOUNDERS' FORUM

The Gamechangers in Sustainability speaker series, co-hosted by American University's Kogod School of Business and Sine Institute of Policy & Politics, brings CEOs, entrepreneurs, and innovators to campus with the common goal of promoting sustainability in all sectors and at all levels of business.

The Founders' Forum is an annual, flagship event as part of the Gamechangers in Sustainability speaker series.

Founders' Forum
Amir Mostafavi, Myles Powell, and Sarah Frimpong

The Gamechangers in Sustainability Founders Forum brought together three entrepreneurs who are redefining the future of sustainable business. The forum featured Sarah Frimpong of Wellfound Foods, Myles Powell of Myles Comfort Foods, and Amir Mostafavi of South Block, with the conversation moderated by Kogod professor and Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship assistant director Danielle Vogel.

Sarah Frimpong is the founder and CEO of Wellfound Foods, a company delivering hand-packaged fresh meals to SmartMarkets throughout the DC/Baltimore region.

Myles Powell is the founder of Myles Comfort Foods, where he crafts a line of BBQ sauces and frozen foods committed to quality and sustainable practices, now sold in major national retailers.

Amir Mostafavi founded South Block with the mission to bring fresh, sustainably sourced juices, smoothies, and bowls to the DC area, building community through wholesome food and vibrant brand experiences.

Founders' Forum
Monica Pearce, Nicole McGrew, and Sara Polon

The Kogod Founders' Forum brought together three women who launched successful sustainable businesses to discuss their priorities and challenges. The forum included Tenth Ward Distilling Company founder Monica Pearce, Threadleaf founder Nicole McGrew, and Soupergirl co-founder Sara Polon.

Monica Pearce founded Tenth Ward Distilling Company and took the business from a tasting room and distillery to an expanded cocktail bar and tasting room, private event venue, and production facility.

Nicole McGrew is the founder of Threadleaf, a women's lifestyle boutique focused on responsibly made, fashion-forward clothing and accessories.

Sara Polon founded Soupergirl along with her mom, Marilyn Polon. The duo was ahead of its time when launching a “direct to consumer” business in 2008.

Founders' Forum
Samy Kobrosly, Lara Lozser, Gabi Febres

AU alumni entrepreneurs Samy Kobrosly, Lara Lozser, and Gabi Febres joined Professor Danielle Vogel to share how they're building sustainable, values-driven food businesses. From growing culturally rooted restaurants to scaling healthier CPG brands, these founders prove that sustainability and success go hand-in-hand.

Samy Kobrosly, an AU alum, is a former radio personality turned chef and entrepreneur. In 2015, while working in a Washington, DC, barbecue joint, he became obsessed with creating a meat-free pork rind after joking with a friend about his inability to enjoy the classic snack due to his Muslim upbringing. This passion led to the creation of SNACKLINS, a plant-based, crunchy snack that quickly gained popularity. In October 2019, Samy took SNACKLINS to ABC’s Shark Tank, where he secured a deal with Mark Cuban, helping to expand the brand’s reach in the healthy snack market.

Lara Lozser is a Kogod School of Business alumna and the co-founder of Hummus Goodness, a company dedicated to delivering fresh, gourmet hummus made with only real ingredients. Passionate about quality and authenticity, Lara ensures that Hummus Goodness is free from preservatives, hydrogenated oils, citric acid, potassium sorbate, and other additives, using only fresh, whole ingredients to create a truly wholesome product.

Gabi Febres is co-owner of Arepa Zone, "a gathering place where people can come together and enjoy Venezuelan culture and traditions." Her heritage is central to her identity, representing culture, family, warmth, happiness, music, and laughter. Despite moving to the States at 7 years old, Gabi has always stayed close to her roots, something she values and protects. Originally from Miami, she moved to Washington, DC, for her undergraduate education at American University, where she felt a strong connection to her Venezuelan upbringing.
