International Applicants
Visa Requests
International students admitted to the MS in Finance program who need a visa to study at American University will be required to complete and submit the CFIS Form or Immigration Transfer Form along with documentation of financial support. Submission of either document is not required to be considered for admission; however, admitted students planning to enroll will need to submit the documentation to initiate the issuance of the I-20.

An English Language Proficiency test is required for all applicants who completed their bachelor’s degree—and master’s degree, if applicable—outside of the United States.
We accept official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo and PTE test scores. All scores must be less than two years old and submitted officially by the testing agency. Minimum score requirements and submission instructions are provided in the dropdown sections below.
Applicants qualify for an automatic waiver of the English Language Proficiency requirement if they have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the approved waiver countries listed below.
Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, Canada, Cayman Islands, Cook Islands, Dominica, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Micronesia, Montserrat, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, United Republic Of, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America, British Virgin Islands, and Zimbabwe.
A minimum composite score of 100 is required for the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) (Test of English as a Foreign Language) under the previous scoring system, or a minimum score of 5 in the new scoring system. Test scores must be less than two years old and submitted officially through the testing center using institution code 5007. Only official test scores will be accepted for application review.
A minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 7.0 is required. Test scores must be less than two years old and submitted officially through the testing center to American University – Kogod School of Business. Only official test scores will be accepted for application review.
A minimum Duolingo English Test score of 120 is required. Test scores must be less than two years old and submitted officially through the Duolingo website. Only official test scores will be accepted for application review.
A minimum PTE (Pearson Test of English) score of 68 is required. Test scores must be less than two years old and submitted officially through the test center using the university code X1Q-K6-10. Only official test scores will be accepted for application review.

The Kogod Graduate Admissions Office reserves the right to conduct additional assessments of English communication skills if there are concerns about an applicant’s proficiency.
Waivers are not granted to applicants who have completed coursework in English outside of the approved waiver countries. English language certificate programs do not qualify for a waiver.
