Why Kogod
OLDEST ACCREDITED BUSINESS SCHOOL IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL
Uniquely positioned to thrive at the nexus of business, government, and society, at Kogod, we believe that business is a force for meaningful change.
American University is recognized for its strong commitment to public service, cross-disciplinary education, international engagement, and research. The university campus is located in a residential area in the Northwest part of the District of Columbia, less than a mile from the Tenleytown Metro Station and near many embassies, government agencies, international agencies, NGOs, nonprofits, and companies.
The Kogod School of Business (Kogod) was established in 1955. Over the years, Kogod has leveraged American University’s strong reputation to provide many opportunities for students interested in the nexus of private business and public service, giving access to a variety of organizations in the vicinity. In 1979, the school was named after alumnus Robert P. Kogod, a successful real estate developer, in recognition of his generous support. David Marchick has served as dean of Kogod since August 2022.
Like tens of thousands of students, staff, and faculty who have graced the halls of the Kogod School of Business, I wanted to learn more: who is Bob Kogod, and what makes him tick?
Unparalleled access
We have the access and opportunities you can't get anywhere else.
Kogod’s location in Washington, DC, and connections throughout the world mean you’ll have access to personal and professional opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. And with our small class sizes, you’ll be able to create meaningful relationships with professors and peers that will last a lifetime.
We keep class sizes small so you can foster meaningful connections with your professors, staff, and fellow students.
The QS ranking takes into account the caliber of the learning experience, including regular synchronous classes, physical meetups, and 24/7 tech support.
The DC metro area ranks third among the top US tech hubs based on employment.
For the third summer, Beacon Building Products will be welcoming Kogod students as paid interns. “I cannot imagine that there is a Fortune 500 company that employs from one school even half of what Beacon is doing with American University,” says Kogod professor and Beacon’s special advisor for business strategy, Ross Cooper.

Imagine you had $1 million from a $100 million venture fund to invest in one business—and three companies to evaluate. What questions would you ask? What would shape your decision? How would you value that investment?
It’s a scenario dozens of AU and Kogod School of Business students, along with thousands more from around the world, tackled at the Venture Capital Investment Competition.
