International Applicants

Visa Requests

International students admitted to the full-time MBA program who need a visa to study at American University will be required to complete and submit the CFIS Form or Immigration Transfer Form along with documentation of financial support. Submission of either document is not required to be considered for admission; however, admitted students planning to enroll will need to submit the documentation to initiate the issuance of the I-20.

English Proficiency Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English and who do not meet the English Proficiency Test Waiver requirements outlined below must demonstrate English language proficiency through completion of one of the following exams within the last two years.

TOEFL

Minimum required score of 100 or higher is required for the internet-based test (IBT)
Submit official scores to code 5007 through the testing center.

Unofficial test scores may be uploaded into the supplemental items section of the application and used to make an application decision, but the official score report is required before the start of the academic term.

IELTS

Minimum score of 7 or higher is required. Unofficial test scores may be uploaded into the supplemental items section of the application and used to make an application decision, but the official score report is required before the start of the academic term.

Duolingo

Minimum score of 120 or higher is required for the internet-based test (IBT).

Official scores must be submitted through the Duolingo website. Unofficial test scores may be uploaded into the supplemental items section of the application and used to make an application decision, but the official score report is required before the start of the academic term.

If an applicant fails to meet the minimum score, they may be considered for American University's Masters Accelerator Program.

Waiver of the English Language Proficiency Test

Applicants may qualify for a waiver if they meet one of the qualifications listed below. Waivers are not permitted for applicants who have completed coursework in English outside of the approved countries listed or who have completed an English language certificate program but have not earned an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the listed countries as outlined in the policy below.

Applicant has completed and been conferred an undergraduate bachelor’s degree where at least 2 years of study was completed while physically located in one of the following countries OR a graduate master’s degree where all coursework was completed in one of the following countries:
