Undergraduate Advising FAQs

What can an academic advisor help me with?
Think of academic advisors as a one-stop shop for your academic concerns. While they typically assist with course planning/scheduling, registrations for internships, study abroad and major/minor questions, they also help students navigate other AU offices and provide guidance with any academic problems they may have (early warnings, academic probation, etc.).
How do I meet with an academic advisor?

We’ve got two options: Drop-in hours and appointments.

Drop-In Hours

Drop-in Hours are held Monday-Friday from 10 am-noon ET (excluding holidays).

Currently, we are holding virtual drop-ins over Zoom (link available here).Once you arrive in the waiting room, an advisor will greet you and take you to a breakout room. This is where the two of you can privately talk over audio or text chat, whatever works best for you!

Due to logistical and staffing needs, we are unable to guarantee that a specific advisor will be available for drop-ins. If you have a strong preference for whom you work with, please make an appointment with that advisor directly.

For longer sessions, please make an appointment. You’ll be asked to choose a reason for your appointment and are able to select an advisor on the following page.

In-Person Appointments
For in-person appointments, please check in at the Kogod Front Desk and we’ll be with you shortly.

How else can I get in touch with an academic advisor?
You can reach us through email or voicemail Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm US ET.

The best way to reach us is through email. Since we use a team advising model, we all share an email inbox and do our best to answer any messages on a first-come basis. Feel free to address your message to your favorite advisor. Though we can’t promise they’ll be the ones to answer (they may be on vacation, ill, or otherwise occupied), we will do our best to connect you to the advisor of your choice. Make sure to include your full name and AUID in your messages so we can quickly locate your student record.

Since we are not on campus some days, our staff members may not be on hand to answer your phone calls. If you choose to call, please leave a detailed voicemail. All voicemails are forwarded to our team, and we will respond as quickly as possible.

I have an internship, what do I do?
Congratulations on obtaining your internship! If you are NOT looking to earn academic credit for your internship, please continue to work with your new supervisor, you do not need to fill out any forms or involve American University.

If you DO plan to earn academic credit, please complete the Internship for Credit form and meet with an academic advisor to discuss the next steps.
I have questions about my tuition or a charge on my student account. Can you help me?
Unfortunately, our office does not have access to financial information. All questions about tuition or billing should be directed to AU Central at aucentral@american.edu or 202-885-8000.
