Matthew L. Pittinsky (SPA/BA ’94) | Co-Founder, CEO & Executive Chairman, Blackboard

Matthew Pittinsky has shaped education technology for decades, transforming how institutions deliver and manage digital learning. At age 24, he co-founded Blackboard with his AU roommate and fraternity big brother, redefining learning management systems and helping universities transition from physical course materials to digital classrooms. Blackboard grew to serve more than 9,000 clients in 60 countries before its acquisition for more than $1.5 billion. Pittinsky later helped build Parchment, which served more than 13,000 colleges and school districts and achieved an $840 million exit.

American University, to me, is synonymous with the people who transformed my life — mentors who sparked my passion for education, lifelong friends, a business co-founder, and the love of my life. AU didn’t just shape my career; it shaped my life and, through those people, me.”

Gary Veloric (Kogod/BSBA ’82) | Founder, Red Stripe Plane Group

Gary Veloric co-founded J.G. Wentworth and launched, invested in, or supported more than 100 companies. He helped launch the career of the Zac Brown Band and led a technology company that earned two Webby Awards. For more than 20 years, Veloric has supported American University through service on the Kogod advisory council, as a commencement speaker, and as the namesake of the Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship is the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat—and the key is learning from both. Being inducted into the American University Business and Entrepreneur Hall of Fame is a tremendous honor, and I’m proud that the Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship is helping students turn ideas into real ventures. I often wish a program like this had existed when I was a student here—it might have softened some of the lessons I learned the hard way on the 'agony of defeat.'"
