The Kogod School of Business and the AU Department of Athletics and Recreation announced today the creation of the Dean and Director Leadership Award to support outstanding business school students (major or minor) who exemplify leadership in both their academic and athletic careers. The scholarship, which will be awarded to one men’s student-athlete and one women’s student-athlete per academic year, will be funded through the Kogod Dean’s Fund. The initial awards of $15,000 will be disbursed over three years, with two annual awardees receiving $2,500 scholarships apiece.

AU’s new Director of Athletics and Recreation JM Caparro and Kogod Dean David Marchick are spearheading the award. Marchick participated in (and completed) the 3,041-mile Race Across America to raise $100,000 in support of student scholarships and AU Athletics.

Caparro and Dean Marchick will form a committee to evaluate nominations for the leadership award. Nominations can be submitted by coaches, students, athletes, faculty and staff. More details about the process will be announced in the fall.

Student athletes at American University inspire me with their work ethic on and off the court; they go on to great careers."

"AU athletes are also great students — consistently performing at the top of their class while juggling a rigorous athletics schedule. I am excited to partner with JM to recognize outstanding student athlete leaders," said Dean Marchick.

“We are thrilled to partner with Dean Marchick and the Kogod School of Business to annually recognize two of our incredible student-athletes who exemplify the values of leadership,” said Caparro. “The wealth of opportunities and the tremendous support provided to our student-athletes by Kogod have made it a popular choice, and it will certainly be difficult to choose only two each year out of all our deserving student-athletes.”

The Dean and Director Leadership Award will be awarded for the first time at the beginning of the spring 2025 semester at the annual Kogod Basketball Night event when Kogod faculty, staff, students and alumni gather to cheer on the AU Men's Basketball team.
