Cynthia O’Brien’s work is all about developing meaningful relationships. As a former recruiter and corporate relations specialist, she believes in the power of partnerships over transactional connections and is taking this approach to reimagine how Kogod supports its students.
As Kogod’s inaugural executive director of career, alumni, and industry engagement, O’Brien is working to build strategic partnerships with businesses, faculty, staff, and graduates to establish innovative pathways for students’ professional development. Her core mission is to connect students with meaningful experiential opportunities, such as internships and mentorship programs, and elevate Kogod into the “school of choice” for top talent and employers.
“It's inspiring to see the impact these connections have on the growth of our students, as well as the overall strength of our community,” says O’Brien. “My goal is to create a stronger sense of support and community by building these deeper connections.”
Before joining Kogod, O’Brien was the executive director of employer connections for the University of Maryland’s business school for over 15 years. Before that, she worked in sales, operations, and talent acquisition in the retail and hospitality sectors.
“Connecting with employers to create strategic engagements to build great recruiting relationships fuels me,” she says. “I’m interested in opportunities that connect people with their passion.”

Kogod: What energizes you most about your work with Kogod in your new role?
Cynthia O'Brien: The opportunity to create strong partnerships between the school, companies, students, and alumni. Engaging with people and facilitating connections that benefit everyone involved is incredibly fulfilling. I am genuinely excited to drive impactful changes to help our dean and Kogod reach new heights.
Are there any initiatives you’re leading or developing that are especially exciting or meaningful to you? Why?
One particularly important initiative is strengthening our collaboration with companies and students, primarily through Kogod’s Office of Career Engagement. We want to ensure students feel fully supported and that companies view Kogod as the premier source for top talent, making it easy to recruit from our school. We’ll concentrate on personalized career counseling, skills workshops, and company/industry engagements to ensure our students are well-prepared for their career journeys and can connect with various companies.
By engaging more with our students one-on-one, we aim to truly understand their goals and needs and provide tailored assistance to help them succeed."

As part of your role, you are working to build, optimize, and expand relationships with employers and business leaders. How does this feed into your overall vision for student success?
This is central to my vision for student success and ultimately elevating the Kogod brand. Making solid corporate partnerships provides our students with increased access to internships and job opportunities. It allows us to align our work with current market needs and offer students relevant, real-world learning experiences. Most importantly, these partnerships provide students with valuable opportunities for professional growth, ensuring they are well-prepared to enter the workforce and thrive in their chosen careers.
Conversely, how would you describe your long-term vision for impacting and benefiting corporate partners?
My long-term vision revolves around creating a "school of choice" mindset, positioning Kogod as the premier destination for hiring top talent. By expanding our corporate partnerships, we aim to provide companies with access to a diverse pool of highly skilled and well-prepared candidates. We also strive to enhance collaboration with faculty. This allows us to align academic projects and research with the strategic goals of our corporate partners, fostering innovation and practical solutions to the challenges companies face.
We need to emphasize collaboration over competition by creating opportunities for students to work together on real-world projects and industry challenges. These experiences not only prepare students for the workforce but also foster a sense of teamwork and shared success."

Increased competitiveness among students can be one challenging byproduct of this work. How do you balance optimizing Kogod’s corporate relationships with fostering unity?
It’s crucial to inform companies about how they can engage with Kogod—and connecting faculty and staff to companies is a great way to do this. Fostering strong corporate relationships allows us to create meaningful partnerships while maintaining a robust, united, collaborative environment.
How does this connect to your overall vision of supporting the school?
Our primary goal is to effectively represent Kogod’s brand. This begins with transparency and open communication, ensuring that all stakeholders—students, faculty, and corporate partners—understand our goals and the benefits of our initiatives. This approach builds trust and aligns everyone's efforts toward common objectives.
Much of this work is grounded in advancing experiential learning opportunities. What makes experiential learning so important for students?
Experiential learning opportunities such as internships, applied projects, and mentorship programs equip students with practical skills and real-world experience that traditional classroom settings can't always provide. These experiences allow companies to see our students in action and provide students with hands-on experience, preparing them to meet today's challenges. It's a fantastic way to gain practical knowledge, develop essential skills, and acquire industry insights to impact their professional growth significantly. Kogod already excels in this area, and we plan to leverage our resources to expand this work.
What sets your approach apart from others leading similar work at business schools?
I use a unique blend of understanding corporate needs and student desires and the ability to strategically align these to help build strong relationships. I also place a great deal of emphasis on understanding the specific goals and requirements of our corporate partners and ensuring exceptional customer service to build meaningful connections. People are at the core of what we do and how we do it. My service-oriented approach means that I prioritize ensuring students and employers feel supported and valued.
There's no secret sauce to what I do, but I am deeply committed and compassionate when I realize the impact my efforts have on others' lives and experiences. I take this to heart, knowing that my work matters and makes a meaningful difference."
