The SustainabilityX® Magazine released its third annual Global 50 Women in Sustainability Awards list earlier this month, highlighting women making significant contributions to sustainability causes and demonstrating leadership in the field. Nicole Darnall, Kogod School of Business professor of management and Eminent Scholar Chair in Sustainability, is among this year’s honorees, reflecting her decades of work in sustainability in business, policy, and higher education.

“This year’s awards celebrate the fearless and innovative women who are leading the charge in sustainability, redefining leadership, and driving transformative change across the globe,” said the SustainabilityX® Magazine team in a press release announcing the list.

The theme for this year’s awards is ‘Embrace Boldness,’ the women on the list exemplify innovation, fearlessness, and forward-thinking in their work to advance sustainability. In a time that demands drastic action to reduce the impact of climate events already being felt globally, leaders in sustainability must be willing to seek out new solutions and advocate loudly for every aspect of our planet. Darnall and her fellow honorees represent the magazine’s theme of bold leadership and provide examples of what today’s leaders in sustainability must be.

Bold leadership is needed to advance transformative sustainability solutions. Embracing boldness motivates me to identify and understand solutions that will matter most—solutions that will truly move the sustainability needle.”

Nicole Darnall

Professor of Management and Eminent Scholar Chair in Sustainability, Kogod School of Business

Darnall was named to the list for her research and work as an advisor on sustainable practices. This semester, she joined the American University community as the inaugural Arlene R. and Robert P. Kogod Eminent Scholar Chair in Sustainability, a joint appointment between the Kogod School of Business and the School of Public Affairs. Though the appointment will keep her busy with teaching, research, and academic collaboration, it’s far from the only work she does to champion sustainability. She serves as commissioner on the General Services Administration’s Acquisition Policy Federal Advisory Committee, advising the agency on its acquisition processes and how it can embed sustainability into its work. She is also the president of the Group for Research on Organizations and the Natural Environment (GRONEN), an organization of fellow researchers on sustainable enterprise. Before joining American University’s community, she served as a foundation professor of sustainability management and public policy at Arizona State University, where she was also founding director of the university’s Sustainable Purchasing Research Initiative and where she remains a foundation professor emerita.

Darnall’s impressive career record is matched by her award-winning body of research. Her work explores sustainability outcomes and behaviors within organizations from various angles, including the role of structures, incentives, and technology in meeting sustainability goals. She has won numerous awards for her research and presented it at conferences globally, all of which represent her innovative and transformative approach to sustainable enterprise.

Darnall’s inclusion on SustainabilityX® Magazine’s list reflects her accomplishments as a sustainability leader and her deep commitment to creating a better world. It’s exactly the kind of achievement that makes her so at home among Kogod’s faculty, who combine their expertise with a shared mission to utilize business as a force for good.

Please join us in congratulating Professor Darnall on this incredible honor!
