Kogod School of Business Deepens Investment in Flagship MS in Sustainability Management Program

American University is further deepening its investment in sustainability by redesigning its flagship MS in sustainability management program with a new curriculum, new online modality, and expanded faculty expertise.

Online MSSM Curriculum Hero
One of few such programs housed in a business school, Kogod’s MS in sustainability management degree is the fastest growing graduate program in the school, attracting talented students from the United States and abroad. Since its inception ten years ago, the program has graduated an ever-expanding global alumni network, with graduates filling sustainability-related roles in the private, public, non-profit, and NGO sectors.

Recognizing that the sustainability field is evolving quickly, the Kogod School of Business sought input from students, employers, experts in sustainability, and faculty, to offer a new, nimbler, and more refined experience for our students. The new curriculum offers the ability to specialize around skills that leverage the business school’s sustainability expertise and AU’s top-ranked strengths in public policy, international relations, environmental science, and law.

Scheduled for implementation in the academic year 2023-24, the curriculum will rebalance the core and elective courses to offer greater flexibility and incorporate new courses on ESG investment, sustainability analytics, sustainable entrepreneurship, and sustainable finance.

To meet the high demand and offer even more flexibility to students, Kogod is also launching an online modality of the program.

The new online modality will enable students to complete their studies entirely online in as few as 12 months as full-time students.

The program mostly consists of condensed evening courses to give the necessary flexibility to working students who may need to adjust the pace of their studies to accommodate work and life demands.”

And all of this would not be possible without a diverse and deeply engaged faculty. Kogod’s sustainability management program benefits from internationally recognized scholars and former and current executives with real-world experience in sustainability. And to support the rapid growth of the program, Kogod also recently recruited and continues to recruit new faculty who are experts in climate change, food systems, sustainable finance, and related areas

Ultimately, it’s about the student experience.

With unrivaled access to expert faculty from within and beyond the business school, business leaders who are gamechangers in sustainability, hands-on learning opportunities in the US and abroad, and a dynamic and ever-growing alumni network of sustainability-minded business leaders, Kogod students are able to take full advantage of American University’s position at the nexus of business, government, and society. With its new format, an improved curriculum, and expanded faculty, Kogod’s MS in sustainability management prepares students to successfully enter one of the fastest-growing employment categories in the last five years.

Kogod’s sustainability management program, unique in that it is housed in a business school, has enabled students to launch careers in sustainability management at prestigious firms and organizations including Bain and Company, EY, UBS, the World Wildlife Fund, the World Bank, and Marriott International.  Kogod recently announced its Gamechangers in Sustainability Speaker Series, in partnership with the Sine Institute of Policy and Politics, where eight highly successful CEOs will share insights on how their businesses are creating a more sustainable world.
